Study in Canada with a stronger application

A Canadian study permit lets most foreign nationals study at a designated learning institution for a program longer than 6 months. A study permit is not a travel document by itself. If IRCC approves the permit, you may also receive a visitor visa or eTA depending on what you need to enter Canada.

The strongest study permit applications connect the program, school, funds, career plan, family situation, and return or future immigration strategy in a coherent way. Officers should be able to understand why this course makes sense for you and why you can comply with temporary resident rules.

Core requirements

Most study permit applicants need:

  • a valid letter of acceptance from a DLI
  • a provincial attestation letter or territorial attestation letter, unless exempt
  • Quebec Acceptance Certificate if studying in Quebec
  • proof of identity, usually passport documents
  • proof of funds for tuition, living costs, and family members
  • statement of purpose or letter of explanation
  • medical exam or police certificate where required
  • evidence of education history, work history, and future career logic

For 2026 applications, PAL/TAL validity and exemptions must be checked carefully. A PAL or TAL must be valid when the application is submitted and usually cannot be reused outside the applicable cap year.

Plan for PGWP before you choose a school

Do not choose a program only because admission is easy. If your goal is to work after graduation, confirm whether the school and program are PGWP-eligible before you pay major tuition deposits. Then review Post-Graduation Work Permit, Express Entry, and PNP planning before you start.

Common refusal risks

Study permit refusals often involve weak financial evidence, unclear program progression, poor explanation of career benefit, missing PAL/TAL, doubts about temporary intent, inconsistent documents, or a school/program that does not align with the applicant's background.

Should I check PGWP before applying?
Yes. If your goal includes working in Canada after graduation, confirm school and program PGWP eligibility before choosing the program.
